SkunkLock Fends Off Bike Thieves With A Cloud Of Pepper Spray

Most bike locks prevent your bike from getting stolen by letting you anchor it to something immovable. SkunkLock is different. Its makers think the best defense is a good offense.

To that end, they’ve designed a lock that comes with its very own integrated countermeasures. SkunkLock does look like a pretty ordinary u-shaped lock, but trust me. It’s got a mean streak, and you don’t want to piss it off.

Say you’re a bike thief and you see a snazzy two-wheeler shackled to a tree outside a building. You see the SkunkLock on it and figure no biggie, you’ll just buzz through it with your trusty cordless angle grinder. As you get about a third of the way through, you suddenly hear the panic-stricken voice of Admiral Ackbar in your head.

SkunkLock has decided that it doesn’t like what you’re doing one bit, and it’s not going to stand idly by and let you finish the job. In a flash, you’re enveloped in a cloud of pepper spray. Rather than wait around for your eyes to stop watering and the intense pain to subside, you high-tail it out of there.

At least that’s how SkunkLock creators and biking enthusiasts Daniel Idzkowski and Yves Perrenoud figure it will play out. Once SkunkLock has a little more street cred, though, they figure crooks will see it and just keep on walking.

Couldn’t they just carry a mask and steal it anyway? Sure, but according to the SkunkLock FAQ their special cocktail is potent enough that it’s still effective against “even some of the most robust gas masks”. They learned as much through some unfortunate personal experiences.

How much does this frame-mountable dispenser of justice cost? If you move quickly, you can score yourself a SkunkLock for $99US over on their Indiegogo project page.
